What are Greenhouse Gases?

Greenhouse gases are gases in the atmosphere, which have a blanketing effect on the Earth by not letting escape the sun’s thermal radiation that is bounced off by the planet.  This blanketing effect is called the greenhouse effect.  The most important green house gas is water vapor; but its amount in the atmosphere is not affected directly by human activities. The most important greenhouse gases whose amount in the atmosphere is changing directly because of human activities, and thus creating climate change are;

    • Carbon Dioxide CO2 (the result of the combustion of hydrocarbons like gasoline, coal, diesel)
    • Methane CH4 (what natural gas is mostly made of)
    • Nitrous Oxide N2O
    • Chlorofluorocarbons CFCs (the one destroying the ozone layer)
    • Ozone O3 ( what protects us from the Ultra Violet radiation that comes from the sun)
