What is the Greenhouse Effect?

It is the blanketing effects of greenhouse gases that absorb thermal radiation form the sun that would have otherwise been bounced back to space by the Earth.  One of the most important facts to know about the Greenhouse Effect is that the Earth’s atmosphere is relatively transparent to solar radiation, but it absorbs the thermal radiation that is bounced off by the Earth.
